Choosing an Implant

How do I know if the Implant is suitable for me?

You should first visit your doctor for a physical exam and a discussion about your contraceptive needs. Generally speaking, however, the implant might be a consideration for you if you are looking for a contraceptive method that:

  • is simple and requires no daily care
  • has no estrogen-related side effects
  • lasts a long time (3-5 years)
  • makes your periods lighter or may even disappear

The Implant may also be an option for you if you:

  • cannot take the oral contraceptive pill
  • have a problem remembering to take a pill on a daily basis.

Those who should not consider the Implant are those who:

  • cannot tolerate irregular bleeding which may occur with the progestin-only implant
  • are afraid of even small surgical procedures (this is necessary for insertion and removal of the implant)
  • suffer from vaginal bleeding other than your regular period
