How does the Implant work?
The implant is a hormonal method of birth control that consists of one or six match-sized rods inserted underneath the skin. Over time, the rods release a steady dose of one hormone only - progestin. This hormone prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs (stops ovulation). The cervical mucus also changes, becoming thicker to block sperm from entering the uterus. At the same time, the lining of the uterus becomes thinner, which further reduces the chances of pregnancy.
