Abstinence

What is Abstinence?

Abstinence simply means: no sexual intercourse.

How does it work?

Since the penis does not enter the vagina pregnancy cannot occur. Abstinence may also call for staying away from any sexual activity that leads to an exchange of body fluids, particularly if you are concerned about the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

How effective is it for preventing pregnancy?

Very effective. But remember that sperm can still find its way into the vagina if ejaculation takes place close to the entrance of the vagina. It's a good idea to have a barrier method of contraception handy, just in case your willpower fails!

It doesn't sound like much fun. Is there anything I can do?

There are lots of other ways that you can show desire and affection while avoiding intercourse including:

  • kissing
  • hugging
  • masturbating
  • massaging
  • rubbing
  • breast/nipple stimulation
