Talking to your doctor

What should I expect?

When you are looking for a reliable method of birth control, you will need to see your physician or gynaecologist to discuss which one is right for you. Your doctor will probably do a physical exam similar to the one you would undergo for your annual health check-up. Your visit might include a:

  • breast examination
  • pelvic examination
  • urine and blood tests
  • blood pressure check
  • measurement of your height and weight

Will the doctor ask me any questions?

In order to determine which contraceptive is right for you, your doctor may want to know something about your sexual history, such as:

  • the nature of your sexual relationship - is it stable, or do you have multiple partners?
  • what kind of protection you plan to use against sexually transmitted disease (STDs) and HIV
  • whether you are looking for a long or short term birth control method

What kinds of questions should I ask my doctor?

Naturally, you may have some questions or concerns yourself when starting a new birth control method. For instance:

Don't be afraid to be open and honest with your physician. It's your body, so ask away!
