What is the Withdrawal Method?
The withdrawal method requires that the male partner withdraws his penis from the entrance of the vagina before he has an orgasm. In this way, sperm do not enter the vagina and there is little chance of sperm meeting an egg and fertilization occurring. The method, also known by its Latin name, "coitus interruptus," requires cooperation on the part of the male partner in particular.
How effective is withdrawal at preventing pregnancy?
Compared to other birth control methods, withdrawal is not reliable. Some couples are self-disciplined enough to practice it as a form of birth control, but it requires considerable practice and skill. Pregnancy can occur because:
- the male partner has no control over the timing of ejaculation
- there is sperm in the pre-ejaculate which can enter the vagina before the penis is withdrawn.
Are there side effects with the Withdrawal Method?
Withdrawal has no related side effects. It may be used as a back-up if there is no other contraceptive method available. In other words, it's far from perfect but it's better than no contraception at all!
