Does the Vaginal Ring have any drawbacks?

The vaginal ring is a "combined" contraceptive like the oral contraceptive pill. While many women will enjoy the convenience of once a month contraception provided by the ring, it may nevertheless not be for everyone. Possible problems that can arise while using the ring include:

  • vaginal discharge, vaginitis and irritation
  • breakthrough bleeding
  • nausea
  • breast tenderness

For more information, please consult your doctor.

When should I call my doctor?

If you have any discomfort while using the ring, check with your doctor who may be able to help. Although serious side-effects are very rare, combined hormonal contraceptive methods are associated with an increased incidence of blood clots, heart attack and stroke. You should go to a hospital or see your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the these side effect.

Who shouldn't use the Ring?

In general, if you have been advised not to use oral contraceptives then the vaginal ring may also pose similar risks and therefore should not be used. However, be sure to always consult your doctor for decisions regarding appropriate birth control options.
